American Oncology Institute opens first centre in Hyderabad

American Oncology Institute (AOI), in partnership with Hyderabad-based Citizens Hospital, has opened its first hospital in India at Hyderabad at the Citizen Hospital’s campus.

AOI a subsidiary of US-based Cancer Treatment Services International (CTSI).

The centre will provide patients with access to comprehensive care of international standard, RP Raju, executive vice chairman, Citizens Hospital, said.
The first phase of the Citizens Hospital with 300 beds has come up with an investment of around $40 million. “We are planning to build the hospital in three phases over the next five years with a total investment around Rs 1,000 crore. Phase two will have 400 beds and once completed, the hospital will have around 650 patient rooms and 1,000 beds,” he added.

Pointing out the reason for entering the Indian market, Joseph A Nicholas, president and chief executive officer of CTSI, said, “Over the years, India is seeing an increase in the number cancer incidence due to lifestyle change and population growth. An estimated 2.5 million Indians are affected by cancer, with over 800,000 new cases and 550,000 deaths reported every year.”

AOL is also looking at expanding to other cities in a hub-and-spoke model, with 100 per cent standardisation across all its centres, Raju said.
